3 family members tied up, father possibly pistol-whipped during armed home invasion robbery

SANTA ANA - A search was under way today for six criminals who broke into a home and terrorized a man, his wife and their teenage son before making off with about $40,000 in cash and valuables, authorities said.

The man was having a late supper with his wife on their patio Wednesday night while their teenage son was inside, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. Then, around 10:40 p.m., police received calls about the home invasion, he said.

While the couple was outside the house, the robbers made their way into the home and bound the teenager with duct tape and zip ties, Bertagna said. The boy's mother went inside the house, was also bound and screamed, prompting her husband to run inside, he said.

As her husband was being tied up, the woman managed to get away and run across the street to the home of a neighbor, Bertagna said.

The robbers fled before police arrived. They wore white ski masks, black hoodies and dark clothes, he said.

One of the robbers pulled off her mask. She was a young Latina with long black hair, Bertagna said, adding that the intruders spoke Spanish to each other.

The man whose home was targeted was hospitalized for injuries he suffered when he was struck with something metallic, possibly a gun, and pepper- sprayed, Bertagna said. He was released today. His wife and son were treated at the scene for bruises and other minor injuries, he said.
