Jon Cryer ... It's Your Move

Jon Cryer is moving into fancy schmancy new digs in a ritzy area of L.A., but he's not above schlepping his stuff from the old house to the new.

Even though the new house clearly isn't finished, Jon and wife Lisa can wait no longer. The home is 7,000 square feet and was extensively renovated over the last year.

Jon -- who we're told is raking in $20 million over the next 2 years on "Two and a Half Men" -- clearly had Charlie on his mind as he carried a chair, wearing a t-shirt with the letters, "BLITZED."

Countess LuAnn Recruits Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon for 'Chic' Music Video

They don't always get along, but perhaps the ladies of The Real Housewives of New York City will sing along to Countess LuAnn de Lesseps's latest musical endeavor.

After all, they seem to be her inspiration.

"Gold, diamonds, caviar," de Lesseps, 46, sings in the music video for "Chic C'est La Vie," while she's joined by fellow Housewives Jill Zarin and Kelly Bensimon." "Life is but a dream when every day you're living in is featured on TV."

The ladies live it up at Atlantic City's Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa, where they sip champagne, gamble, sip more champagne and sing about "money power and romance."

And the shout-outs to her ladies and their lifestyles get even more specific: "Attention Jill [Zarin], bring your jewelry," she continues. "Cindy [Barshop], bring those crystals. Ramona [Singer], bring that Pinot. Sonja [Morgan], her man. Kelly [Bensimon], the jelly beans. Alex [McCord] bring Simon [van Kempen], and I'll bring the diamonds."

De Lesseps made her music debut last summer with her song "Money Can't But You Class."

Hulk Hogan: Ex-wife Linda is 'delusional'

Hulk Hogan is firing back at ex Linda for claiming he got violent with her during their marriage.

NBC; Paul Kane/Gett

Hulk Hogan is firing back at ex Linda for claiming he got violent with her during their marriage.

Linda Hogan is receiving some backlash for comments she recently made about her ex-husband.

And the person who's not happy with her latest claims is none other than Hulk Hogan himself.

Hogan, 57, called in to the "Bubba the Love Sponge Show" to Tuesday to refute domestic violence allegations, which were made public by his ex-wife in her new memoir.

As the Daily News previously reported, Linda Hogan wrote, "[Hulk] tore my shirt. He threw lamps. He held me down on the bed with his hands around my throat during arguments, slamming doors, pounding walls."

She was even scared he might escalate to the point of extreme violent behavior.

"I was always afraid he would kill me in one of his rages," she added.

But, Hogan is now saying that he "never laid a hand on her" and his ex's accusations are "a cold, blatant lie."

Hogan calls his former wife "delusional," a "non-issue" and someone who is "still riding on the Hulk Hogan name."

And now he too has some not-so-nice words to say about his ex.

"Just take her and put her in the same category with the Iron Sheik and the Ultimate Warrior. They all belong together," he said.

The former pro wrestler superstar and his reality show wife divorced in 2007 after 24 years of marriage. They have two children together: daughter Brooke, 23, and son Nick, 21.

Ladies night out with Salman

Ladies night out with Salman

Salman Khan?s Being Human show at the HDIL India Couture Week 2010 on Saturday night was a feast for the eyes as the superstar dished out eight oomphy ladies of Tinseltown ? including the top three actresses of today, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra ? on the runway. Kareena and Priyanka were seen holding hands when they came for the curtain call with Salman and thus managed to dispel the gossip of any sort of animosity. The others to sashay down the ramp were Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Bipasha Basu, Karisma Kapur and Sushmita Sen as Salman decoded fashion from 1920s to present times in a grand musical-like choreography. High on oomph quotient, the show only showcased eight ensembles but the drama ? the provocative dancing and the extravagant opulent props, made sure that everybody was dazzled. In Dabangg style Sallu had distributed whistles to everyone giving them virtually the licence to express their excitement when the leading ladies soared temperature on the catwalk. Preity opened the show strutting in a sexy black dress ? a provocateur that certainly made the audiences get going about the 1920s. The embodiment of 30s was the evidently slimmed down Katrina who was greeted by tap dancers and models dressed as the mafia of that era. Rani portrayed the 40s ? she glided in with Mughal-e-Azam clip and Pakeezah?s iconic track Chalte Chalte playing at the backdrop. Her nawabi tehzeeb was an instant hit as she bowed in front of the audiences in a vintage ?

An Angel's Idea for a Fund

Over the last year I have spent more time talking to interesting women about a variety of topics. What kind of work they do, their companies, their ideas, their families, how to fund more women entrepreneurs, how be more transparent about our lives to help the next generation, etc.

One of the many topics is how to connect more women angels, like myself. I certainly have a small handful of people that I show businesses to that come across my desk. I am curious what they might think and perhaps if we would invest together. Also, it helps when doing diligence. Regardless of those conversations, there is a lot of singular focus and there is something to said for group that is focused on the same thing, like a company.

I have been thinking about what a womans fund would look like for a while. I have investments in tech based companies but I also have investments in companies that for lack of a better description are brick and mortar models. Certainly the brick and mortar models use tech but their businesses only use it because it helps them expand and everyone must have a social media/site as part of their business these days.

Here is my idea. 50% of the capital raised would go to tech related businesses.

Tech related is a broad topic so I define it as a business that uses tech as a platform to create their business and without the technology piece, they wouldn't be in business. I have already invested in companies like that such as Food52, Red Stamp, Catch-a-Fire, Curbed/Eater/Racked, Nest.io, Editd, Edition01 and DailyWorth. Btw, except for Curbed Media, all of these companies were started by women entrepreneurs and most of them have a balance of women and men at the top of the company. To me, that makes for a much better organization.

The other 50% would go towards more brick and mortar operations. Those term sheets are much different. I would set up a group of advisors around these businesses to help insure their success. Where in the tech world you generally have multiple investors that can give advice and help the entrepreneurs grow their company, in the brick and mortar not so much. There are a few models in the non-profit world where money has been given to women to start their own businesses and there is a path that they follow that helps the entrepreneur avoid many pitfalls.

Those businesses, again started by women entrepreneurs, have a difficult time get funding. Think of a woman in a community who is interested in a business where she provides all the sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. to all the local schools in the area. A bank is not interested in funding someone like that but perhaps we would.

If we could come up with something where more women are getting funded to create companies that could grow in range from $10M to $100M that are evenly balanced between men and women at the top and provide jobs opportunites for people who have chosen to stay home and want to work hours that work with their life style or want to re-enter the work place, the impact in the economy and communities could be significant.

Not saying I am doing this but am just thinking out loud.

This is an article by Joanne Wilson, a The NextWomen contributor. Joanne's blog can be found here.

Riva Greenberg: Glycemic Load and Glycemic Index: What's the Difference and Why Does it Matter?

A few months ago I wrote about using the glycemic index (GI) ranking to manage weight and diabetes. Another measurement many use for weight and blood sugar management is Glycemic Load (GL). I was confused about the difference between these two systems so I spoke with registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, Susan Weiner, who straightened me out. This information may help you too.

(Editor's note: People with diabetes should speak to a qualified physician before starting a new diet.)

Q: What is glycemic load in very simple terms?

Susan Weiner: Glycemic load is a ranking system for carbohydrate-rich food that measures the amount of carbohydrates in a serving of food.

Foods with a glycemic load under 10 are considered low -- GI foods and have little impact on your blood sugar; between 10 and 20 moderate-GI foods with moderate impact on blood sugar, and above 20 high GI-foods that tend to cause blood sugar spikes.

Q: How is glycemic load related to glycemic index?

SW: The glycemic index indicates how rapidly a carbohydrate is digested and released as glucose (sugar) into the blood stream. In other words, how quickly foods break down into sugar in your bloodstream. A food with a high GI raises blood sugar more than a food with a medium to low GI.

But the glycemic index does not take into account the amount of carbohydrate in a food. So glycemic load is a better indicator of how a carbohydrate food will affect blood sugar.

Here's a chart with carbohydrate foods' GL and GI

Q: If a food has a high glycemic index and a low glycemic load -- like graham crackers have a GI of 74 and a GL of 8.1 -- how will that affect your blood sugar?

SW: Food ranked high on the GI may represent a huge portion of a food because GI is not based on standard serving sizes. Basically, if a food is ranked high on the glycemic index it has readily available carbohydrate for quick absorption. However, the same food can have a low glycemic load because there may not actually be much total carbohydrate in a given serving of that food. A low GL is the better indicator that a food won't have much impact on blood glucose levels.

Here are two examples: Watermelon has a high GI of 72, yet a low GL of 7.21. The high GI is based on 5 cups of watermelon, not an actual serving size of 1 cup. The low GL means one serving of watermelon doesn't contain much carbohydrate, because it is actually mostly water. The low GL indicates that a serving of watermelon won't have much impact on your blood sugar.

Carrots are another example of a low GL food that many people think will raise their blood sugar a lot -- but it's not true. That's because carrots have a high GI of 71. However, what most people don't know, is that the GL for carrots is only 6. Therefore, unless you're going to eat a pound and a half of carrots in one sitting, an average serving of carrots will have very little impact on blood glucose levels. That said, juicing carrots -- which means consuming more carrots at once -- will have a greater impact on blood glucose.

Q: How can knowing the glycemic load and glycemic index of foods be used to make healthier eating choices?

SW: Everyone can benefit by eating a balanced diet of protein and fat, and foods that are lower on the GL and GI index. Foods with a lower GL and GI typically are high in fiber and nutrients and sustain your energy better throughout the day.

Also, knowing the GL of a food is a better indicator of whether that food will cause your blood sugar to spike. When your blood sugar spikes, the body releases extra insulin to bring down your blood sugar. If your body is asked to release extra insulin on a regular basis, it begins to lead to insulin resistance for many people and diabetes -- especially if diabetes is in your family.

Q: Can knowing the glycemic load of foods help people lose weight?

SW: Yes. Consuming low GL and GI foods keeps us satiated longer because these foods are more slowly broken down for glucose utilization. The result is that you feel fuller for longer.

When you consume high GL and GI foods, blood sugar levels spike which causes a short-term feeling of fullness, but then blood sugars plummet which causes you to crave food again and you ultimately end up consuming excess calories, which contributes to weight gain.

Q: If someone is trying to watch their weight, or has diabetes and wants to keep their blood sugar more stable, can you give us a sample low glycemic load menu?

SW: Here's a sample low GL menu:

Breakfast
2 egg omelet with c. onions
Low-carb bread
1 tbs. almond butter

Snack
1 string cheese
Baby carrots

Lunch
3oz. grilled chicken
1 c. baby spinach
 c. cucumber
 c. beets
1 tbs. parmesan cheese
1 small apple

Snack
 c. broccoli
1 tbs. light ranch dressing

Dinner
3oz. salmon with mango, corn, cilantro salsa
6 spears of asparagus drizzled with extra virgin olive oil
8 oz. seltzer

Dessert
4 oz. sugar-free pudding

Q: How seriously should we take all this?

SW: Some evidence suggests GL and GI diets can benefit overall health -- especially for people with diabetes, although, more conclusive research is needed to know for sure.

People who favor these rankings feel that GL and GI diets can help in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases. Detractors note that selecting foods only by using GL and GI could cause people to choose bacon rinds over watermelon. I think we each have to decide for ourselves.

9 arrested in connection with illegal firearms trafficking in San Fernando Valley

This undated photo shows a sample of weapons Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) undercover agents purchased during Operation Woodchuck, an undercover operation that targeted firearm traffickers in the San Fernando Valley. The ATF announced today, Wednesday, June 29, 2011, the arrest of seven defendants for selling illegal firearms and narcotics in the San Fernando Valley. (Photo courtesy of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF))

LOS ANGELES - Nine people were arrested today as a result of a yearlong investigation into illegal firearms trafficking in the San Fernando Valley, authorities said

The investigation, dubbed "Operation Woodchuck," was conducted by personnel from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Los Angeles Police Department, ATF spokesman Chris Hoffman said.

The eight suspects arrested are: Arthur Chorny, 41, of Studio City; David Abbott, 52, of Los Angeles; Anthony Campos, 37, of Canoga Park; Guillermo Navarrete, 35, of Northridge; Manuel Santo, 41, of Canoga Park; Guy Smith, 49, of Los Angeles; Drew D. Darchuck, 42, of Northridge; and Mehran Zamany, 46, of Woodland Hills.

The men were expected to be arraigned today in United States District Court in Los Angeles. If convicted of the charges in the indictment, they face prison sentences ranging from five years to life.

Three other men wanted on the federal indictments remain at large: Elijah Brown, 38, of Los Angeles; Mitchell D. Knox, 22, of Studio City, and Hector Valles, 46, of Northridge. A 12th defendant named in connected with the case -- Claire Haviland, 49, of Chatsworth -- was also arrested today, and she has been charged in Los Angeles County on state firearm and narcotic violations, Hoffman said.

During the undercover investigation, an ATF agent infiltrated a group selling illegal firearms and drugs in the San Fernando

Valley, and agents bought stolen firearms, machine guns and silencers, Hoffman said.

Chorny, in 2005, was one of three men charged in connection with the discovery of 60-70 sticks of dynamite in a Van Nuys warehouse, but he allegedly fled while free on bail, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, according to District Attorney records.

Warrants were served overnight at locations that included Woodland Hills and Marina del Rey. A hazardous-material team was sent to one location -- the 6900 block of Lubao Avenue in Woodland Hills -- but crews found only household chemicals at the site and determined there was no hazard, Hoffman said.

Other locations connected to the operation included the 4000 block of West 28th Street; the 1300 block of West Washington Boulevard; and the location where some boats were berthed in G Basin along Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey. The sheriff's department assisted in securing one vessel, which was seized by the ATF on allegations that it was used to transport illegal weapons.

Jason Silva: Darwin's Pharmacy: Sex, Plants and the Evolution of the Noosphere

Richard Doyle also goes by mobius, an indicator of just how important interconnections are to him -- and how transformative, bedeviling and hypnotic his ideas can be. As a professor of English and science, technology, and society at Pennsylvania State University, he has taught courses in the history and rhetoric of the emerging technosciences - sustainability, space colonization, biotechnology, nanotechnology, psychedelic science, information technologies, biometrics -- and the cultural and literary contexts from which they sprout. An explorer of the exciting and confusing rhetorical membrane between humans and an informational universe, he argues that in co-evolution with technology, we find ourselves in an evolutionary ecology that is as vital as it is unexplored.

In Darwin's Pharmacy: Sex, Plants and the Evolution of The Nosphere, the transhumanist philosopher focuses on his favorite technology: the psychedelic, "ecodelic" plants and chemicals (read: drugs) that can help make us process more information and make us aware of the effect of language and music and nature on our consciousness, thereby offering us an awareness of our own ability to effect our own consciousness through our linguistic and creative choices. And that, from an evolutionary perspective, is simply sexy.

What follows is a portion of an "ecstatic dialogue" I had with Richard. We touch upon creativity, the evolution of mind and the "vertigo of freedom", among a myriad of other topics.

JASON: Your new book Darwin's Pharmacy talks about the relationship between psychedelic plants and the accelerating evolution of the "noosphere", which some define as the knowledge substrate of reality, the invisible, informational dimension of collective intelligence and human knowledge. Is this more or less accurate?

RICH: The book features a set of nested claims about the evolution of mind, psychedelics (or, as I prefer and propose, "ecodelics"), and the evolution of the noosphere, but all of the claims can be understood via two claims:

(1) Ecodelics have been an integral part of the human toolkit, so suppressing them is like suppressing music, jokes or other aspects of our humanity. (Here I am following Samorini, Siegel, and others)

and

(2) As integral parts of the human toolkit, ecodelics are best modeled as part of sexual selection -- the competition for mates and the leaving of progeny. A careful look at Charles Darwin's writings on sexual selection will show that sexual selection works through the management of attention -- what we would now call "information technologies." Think birdsong, bioluminescence ( the most widespread communication technology on the planet), poetry. The peacock is managing and focusing peahen attention with his feathers, so what we have called "mind" has been involved in evolution for a very long time. Mandrilles eat iboga before competing for mates.

I work with the notion of the noosphere drawn from V.I. Vernadsky, and propose that we define it as the collective effect of attention of ecosystems. Psychedelics seem to draw our attention to the whole. Ecodelics dwindle the broadcast of the ego -- it is not very good at perceiving the whole, just as we can't, unlike a butterfly, taste with our feet. With the ego dwindled, we can become aware of the noosphere -- the message of the whole. This has particular importance as we grapple with the effects of human consciousness and its externalization in technology on the biosphere.

JASON: The Jesuit Priest and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin spoke of the Noosphere very early on. A profile in WIRED Magazine article said, "Teilhard imagined a stage of evolution characterized by a complex membrane of information enveloping the globe and fueled by human consciousness".. Teilhard saw the Net coming more than half a century before it arrived. He believed this vast thinking membrane would ultimately coalesce into "the living unity of a single tissue" containing our collective thoughts and experiences." Teilhard wrote, "The living world is constituted by consciousness clothed in flesh and bone." He argued that the primary vehicle for increasing complexity consciousness among living organisms was the nervous system. The informational wiring of a being, he argued -- whether of neurons or electronics -- gives birth to consciousness. As the diversification of nervous connections increases, evolution is led toward greater consciousness... thoughts?

RICH: Yes, he also called it this process of the evolution of consciousness "Omega Point". The noosphere imagined here relied on a change in our relationship to consciousness as much to any technological change and was part of evolution's epic quest for self awareness. Here Teilhard is in accord with Julian Huxley (Aldous' brother, a biologist) and Carl Sagan when they observed that"we are a way for the cosmos to know itself." Sri Aurobindo's The Life Divine traces out this evolution of consciousness as well through the greek and Sanskrit traditions as well as Darwinism and (relatively) modern philosophy. All are describing evolution's slow and dynamic quest towards understanding itself.

JASON: Jacques Monod, the Parisian biologist who shared a Nobel Prize in 1965, proposed that "just as the biosphere stands above the world of nonliving matter, so an "abstract kingdom" rises above the biosphere. The denizens of this kingdom? Ideas... how do you respond to this notion?

RICH: Yes, the irony here is that in in his amazing book Chance and Necessity, Monod was part of the rather vicious attacks on Teilhard. Teilhard was attacked by both the Church and mainstream science. Was he on to something? Nobody was more mainstream than Karl Popper, the philosopher of science, and he also talked about the "Three Worlds" of "objects", "mental events" and the "products of the human mind", with the last, 'World Three', corresponding roughly to the noosphere. One significant difference between my use of this map and Popper and others is that I do not limit the effects of attention to human attention. Flowering plants, for example, work on this level of the biosphere that involves insect attention and perception.

JASON: This 'world of ideas' sounds a lot like the Noosphere.. are these two guys saying the same thing here?

RICH: As I mentioned above, I think there are important differences in our use of this map, but all of these authors are pointing to the need to model an aspect of our ecosystems that involves what the plant scientists now call "signaling and behavior" as well as the collective effects of that signaling and behavior. I find that the noosphere is a good metaphor and mneumonic device for doing that and helps us think on a more planetary and informational scale.

Precisely because the noosphere is about differentials of attention, it matters how we model it.

JASON: James Gleick, author of The Information has said that ideas influence evolution:"Ideas have retained some of the properties of organisms [...]Like them, they tend to perpetuate their structure and to breed; they too can fuse, recombine, segregate their content; indeed they too can evolve, and in this evolution selection must surely play an important role."

The American neurophysiologist Roger Sperry also arged that ideas are "just as real" as the neurons they inhabit: Ideas cause ideas and help evolve new ideas. They interact with each other and neighboring brains, and thanks to global communication, in far distant, foreign brains... to produce in toto a burstwise advance in evolution that is far beyond anything to hit the evolutionary scene yet" What are your thoughts on this?

RICH: First, I like "idea sex" as a meme, and yet I think it is in some way redundant. I am working with Geoffrey Miller's hypothesis (which was also, implicitly, Charles Darwin's) that the human mind evolves as a courtship device. Thinking and story telling are like birdsong - they play a role in how we pair up. Darwin (as well as more contemporary researchers like Nottebohm) focused on the role of song in courtship and neurogenesis. Nottebohm observed juvenile finches singing their brains larger!

Gleick's treatment of the evolution of ideas is strikingly resonant with Plato's dramatization of the effect of writing to "get into the wrong hands" and drift. (See the Phaedrus). I honestly think we are still grappling with the fact that our minds are distributed across a network by technology, and have been in a feedback loop between our brains and technologies at least since the invention of writing. As each new "mutation" occurs in the history of evolution of information technology, the very character of our minds shifts. McCluhan's Understanding Media is instructive here as well (he parsed it as the Global Village), and of course McLuhan was the bard who advised Leary on "Tune in, Turn on, Drop Out" and very influential on Terence McKenna.

One difference between now and Plato's time is the infoquake through which we are all living. This radical increase in quantity no doubt has qualitative effects - it changes what it feels like to think and remember. Plato was working through the effect of one new information technology - writing - whereas today we "upgrade" every six months or so...Teilhard observes the correlative of this evolutionary increase in information - and the sudden thresholds it crosses - in the evolution of complexity and nervous systems. The noosphere is a way of helping us deal with this "phase transition" of consciousness that may well be akin to the phase transition between liquid water and water vapor - a change in degree that effects a change in kind.

Darwin's Pharmacy suggests that ecodelics were precisely such a mutation in information technology that increased sexually selective fitness through the capacity to process greater amounts of information, and that they are "extraordinarily sensitive to initial rhetorical traditions." What this means is that because ecodelic experiences are so sensitive to the context in which we experience them, they can help make us aware of the effect of language and music etc on our consciousness, and thereby offer an awareness of our ability to effect our own consciousness through our linguistic and creative choices. This can be helpful when trying to browse the infoquake. Many other practices do so as well - meditation is the most well established practice for noticing the effects we can have on our own consciousness, and Sufi dervishes demonstrate this same outcome for dancing. I do the same on my bicycle, riding up a hill and chanting.

One problem I have with much of the discourse of "memes" is that it is often highly reductionistic - it often forgets that ideas have an ecology too, they must be "cultured." Here I would argue that drawing on Lawrence Lessig's work on the commons, the "brain" is a necessary but insufficient "spawning" ground for ideas that becomes actual. The commons is the spawning ground of ideas; brains are pretty obviously social as well as individual. Harvard biologist Richard Lewontin notes that there is no such thing as "self replicating" molecules, since they always require a context to be replicated. This problem goes back at last to computer scientist John Von Neumann's 1947 paper on Self reproducing automata.

I think Terence McKenna described the condition as "language is loose on planet three", and its modern version probably occurs first in the work of writer William S. Burroughs, whose notion of the "word virus" predates the "meme" by at least a decade. Then again this notion of "ideas are real" goes back to cosmologies that begin with the priority of consciousness over matter, as in "In the beginning was the word, and the word was god, and the word was with god." So even Burroughs could get a late pass for his idea.

JASON: Richard Dawkin's definition of a meme is quite powerful: "I think that a new kind of replicator has recently emerged on this very planet, [...] already achieving evolutionary change at a rate that leaves the old gene panting far behind." [the replicator is] human culture; the vector of transmission is language, and the spawning ground is the brain."

This notion that the "the vector of transmission is language" is very compelling.. It seems to suggest that just as in biological evolution the vector of transmission has been the DNA molecule, in the noosphere, the next stage up, it is LANGUAGE that has become a major player in the transfer of information towards achieving evolutionary change.. Kind of affects how you think about the phrase "words have power". This insight reminds me of a quote that describes, in words, the subjective ecstasy that a mind feels when upon having a transcendent realization that feels as if it advances evolution:

"A universe of possibilities,

Grey infused by color,

The invisible revealed,

The mundane blown away

by awe"

Is this what you mean by 'the ecstasy of language'?

RICH: Above, I noted that ecodelics can make us aware of the feedback loops between our creative choices -- should I eat mushrooms in a box? -- Should I eat them with a fox? -- and our consciousness. In other words, they can make us aware of the tremendous freedom we have in creating our own experience. Leary called this "internal freedom." Becoming aware of the practically infinite choices we have to compose our lives, including the words we use to map them, can be overwhelming -- we feel in these instances the "vertigo of freedom." What to do? In ecodelic experience we can perceive the power of our maps. That moment in which we can learn to abide the tremendous creative choice we have, and take responsibility for it, is what I mean by the "ecstasy of language."

I would point out, though, that for those words you quote to do their work, they have to be read. The language does not do it "on its own" but as a result of the highly focused attention of readers. This may seem trivial but it is often left out, with some serious consequences. And "reading" can mean "follow up with interpretation". I cracked up when I googled those lines above and found them in a corporate blog about TED, for example. Who knew that neo-romantic poetry was the emerging interface of the global corporate noosphere?

Lewis Jacobs/NBC

With auditions, battle rounds and eliminations all behind them, the final four contestants sang their hearts out one last time on Monday night's The Voice.

Javier Colon kicked off the night with his original song, "Stitch By Stitch." While he got props once again for his silky smooth vocals, it was something else that had the judges singing the crooner's praise: his "amazing" personality.

Next was Dia Frampton and mentor Blake Shelton. The duo rocked out in matching suits and shades to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down."

Vicci Martinez followed with her original song "Afraid to Sleep," which Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine agreed was "fearless."

Sitting amid a multitude of instruments, Beverly McClellan and Aguilera belted out a touching rendition of "Beautiful." While her mentor's vocals occasionally overshadowed McClellan, the powerhouse finalist was ultimately able to hold her own.

Returning to the stage with a piano, Frampton showcased her original song "Inventing Shadows."

"You never cease to amaze me, you pretty little thing," gushed Cee Lo afterwards.

Colon and Levine then paid homage to the king of pop by singing "Man in the Mirror."

The last to take the stage solo was McClellan, who rocked out on top of a piano and was the only finalist to receive a standing ovation from all four judges for her original song, "Love Sick."

And finally, Martinez and mentor Green ? who donned a Mohawk and a red hot outfit ? ended the night on a high note, battling out on stage to Pat Benetar's "Love Is a Battlefield."

Nathan Gardels: Kissinger: It's Time for China to Start Shaping the New Global System

BEIJING -- When the now 88-year-old Henry Kissinger sat down with Chairman Mao to discuss opening up China back in the 1970s, America was at the peak of its power. It surely never entered Kissinger's mind at the time that less than half a century later, as the Communist Party of China confidently celebrates its 90th anniversary, he would be back in Beijing passing the baton of global leadership on to his hosts.

Opening a conference of China's most important think tank on globalization last Saturday, the great statesman compared China today to the U.S. in 1947.

After the Napoleonic Wars, Kissinger observed, Britain emerged as the top world power and stayed that way for over a century. But by 1947, Ernest Bevin, foreign secretary in the waning days of the empire, felt compelled to tell his American counterpart that, "as the largest creditor, the U.S. must now take the lead in shaping the new order." Hence the Marshall Plan launched by the Americans to rebuild after the war, the dominant role of the dollar, and America's ascendant path for the rest of the 20th century.

As the world's largest creditor, China is now where America was in 1947, on the cusp of the next world order. Kissinger told his hosts that while this transition from one system to another will likely take another 30 years, China's role will only grow because it is obliged by its own self-interest to shape the global system that has shifted away from its "North Atlantic pole" toward China and the emerging economies.

In Kissinger's view, China will be drafted into leadership at an accelerating pace because of the ongoing paralysis in the West. America, he put it politely, "is absorbed in a debate over the role of government and the sources of vitality in the United States; over how much government we should have and who should pay for it." Europe is gripped by both "a financial and conceptual crisis, suspended between a national framework and its substitute."

"A sense of cooperation is critical," said Kissinger, "because we have entered a new era of complexity and are looking for an overriding framework. We have to adjust to the entry of a whole series of new players" on the global scene. For Kissinger, the "principal instrument of adjustment is the G-20," where each country must fit its national aspirations into an international arrangement "that avoids a zero sum competition for economic growth."

Kissinger is right. In the past two centuries, Britain and then the United States were the hegemonic powers that imposed the "global public goods" of security, financial stability, a major reserve currency and open trade. Today, the U.S. and the G-7 advanced economies are increasingly unable to provide them. Yet, the emerging economies, led by China, are not yet able to do so.

For this reason, the G-20, which combines both the advanced and emerging economies, must collectively provide these global public goods. In a truly multi-polar world, even one in which China will be the largest economy by 2050, this will be the "new normal" for the foreseeable future.

The challenge is whether global governance can be established without one dominant power or set of interests calling the shots. One path forward has been suggested by Zheng Bijian, the former vice chair of the Central Party School, author of China's "peaceful rise" doctrine and confidant of the country's leaders. China can only reach its goals of "qualitatively improving the life of the ordinary Chinese" and moving up the middle-income ladder "in the context of interdependence," Zheng says.

Thus, Zheng says, China must move beyond the "peaceful rise" idea to "expand and deepen a convergence of interests with others globally. When there is an accumulation of converging interests, there will be a solid foundation for common interests."

Those "convergent interests" amount to the global public goods of the 21st century. Zheng specifically mentions fighting climate change, and joint initiatives on low-carbon growth, especially with the United States.

There are others that the G-20 must take up, such as global financial stability, the phasing in of a multi-currency global reserve basket (including the RMB) to replace the dollar, a new governance structure for the IMF which reflects the power of the emerging economies, and a revived or reconfigured Doha trade round.

One area where China, as the world's largest creditor, could play a critical role is in helping to stabilize the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) through economic development -- something in the interest of the whole world, not least for energy security. After all, China is already playing a significant role in Europe through buying the bonds of the most troubled countries.

In the wake of the Arab revolutions, there was much talk of a "Marshall Plan" for the MENA countries. At the G-8 meeting in Deauville recently, French President Nicolas Sarkozy managed to raise a pledge of $20 billion for this purpose. That seems a largely hollow commitment since the advanced economies are drowning in deficits and mired in a sovereign debt crisis.
Instead of a "Marshall Plan," why not a "Hu Jintao plan" sponsored by the G-20 in which China recycles some its massive reserve surplus, along with the Gulf states, in a way that benefits the whole global system?

As Kissinger suggested, just as the Marshall Plan merged a rising America's obligations and self-interest in shaping the world order of the last half of the 20th century, might now be the right time for China to take up its new role in such a way? The Americans were right to listen to Ernest Bevin. The Chinese would be right to listen to Henry Kissinger.

AP source: MLB 'probably' will try to take Dodgers

WILMINGTON, Del. - The owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers won a reprieve in bankruptcy court Tuesday to maintain day-to-day operations, while Major League Baseball considered seizing control of the cash-strapped ballclub.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is squaring off in bankruptcy court against the league in a contentious battle over one of the most storied - and lucrative - franchises in baseball. The ownership fight is linked in part to McCourt's divorce from his wife and former team CEO Jamie McCourt, who is also claiming half his assets.

The Dodgers have blamed their bankruptcy filing on Commissioner Bud Selig's refusal to approve a multibillion-dollar TV deal with Fox that McCourt was counting on to keep the franchise afloat.

McCourt gained approval from Judge Kevin Gross to enter into a $150 million bankruptcy financing arrangement to keep the team running.

A person familiar with the league's plans told The Associated Press that MLB "probably" will file a motion to seize the Dodgers, which has been operating under the oversight of a monitor appointed by Selig in April. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

Baseball's constitution allows Selig to take control of a team that seeks Chapter 11 protection, but the league first must file a motion seeking termination of the franchise.

It's unclear when that motion would be filed, but the judge asked attorneys representing Selig for a copy of the league's constitution, noting that it "has an impact here."

Gross granted the Dodgers' request for debtor-in-possession financing after attorneys for both sides huddled behind closed doors for more than an hour, emerging with an agreement to make two modifications to the proposed agreement with hedge fund Highbridge Capital.

One of the modifications reduces the exit fee that would be due to Highbridge from $4.5 million to $250,000. The other removes certain milestones in the financing agreement regarding the sale of the team's broadcast rights. Those milestones included weekly updates on the team's effort to license its broadcast rights, and a July 29 deadline to agree on a process calling for bankruptcy court approval of a sale within six months of Monday's bankruptcy filing, and a closing within 45 days of the court order.

Earlier Tuesday, the league filed an objection to the financing proposal, accusing McCourt of siphoning off more than $100 million in club revenue and driving the Dodgers into a liquidity crisis, also citing his lavish lifestyle with his ex-wife.

The league argued that its own financing offer was superior because it eliminated the $4.5 million exit fee, reduced the interest rate by 3 percent, did not require the team to encumber assets, and did not impose an artificial timeline for disposing of the broadcast rights.

The MLB attorneys argued that McCourt's financing proposal should be rejected because it compels the team to sell the future broadcast rights to meet current expenses and to provide money for his personal use.

In court papers, the Dodgers argued that the league's objection to the team's financing proposal revealed Selig's "overarching desire" to exert a "stranglehold" on the team.

Attorneys for the Dodgers said the league's proposal would have given Selig sole discretion over the team's budget, required the team to pay all the league's legal fees and expenses not just as a lender, but as an adversary in the bankruptcy case, and allowed for a loan default for any violation of MLB rules and regulations.

"The commissioner's financing proposal is nothing other than a thinly veiled effort to take total control over the debtors and these cases," team attorneys wrote, adding that it is no secret that Selig wants a change of ownership.

"The commissioner's efforts seem to be driven by a personal animosity towards Mr. McCourt that unbiased observers have recognized as being `unprecedented,"' they added, citing media reports. "The debtors have no obligation to accept financing from such a determined adversary."

While agreeing to the interim financing, both sides reserved their rights to argue all issues surrounding the bankruptcy filing, including the possibility that the league might seek to have the case dismissed, and whether former Texas Rangers President Thomas Schieffer should remain as monitor of the Dodgers. Schieffer was appointed to monitor the team on Selig's behalf after the commissioner took the extraordinary step in April of assuming control of the troubled franchise, saying he was concerned about the team's finances and how the Dodgers are being run.

"I recognize that there is a lot ahead of us," Gross said before adjourning.

In addition to issuing the interim financing order, Gross granted several routine motions that will allow the team to continue operations, authorized the Dodgers to continue paying vendors, utility providers and employees, and to keep up with tax and insurance obligations.

The granting of such motions is routine in first-day hearings in bankruptcy court, but Gross noted that the baseball club's case is unique in some aspects.

"I haven't seen a wage motion quite like this one," the judge said, referring to the team's 44-page motion to continue paying hundreds of full-time and part-time employees, including about 250 players, most of whom are in the minor league ranks.

Gross also granted the team's request to honor payments it is required to make under collective bargaining agreements.

"The seamless, uninterrupted operation of the team is vital," said Richard Seltzer, an attorney for the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Thomas Lauria, an attorney representing Selig's office, disagreed with Dodgers attorney Bruce Bennett that the league and the team were adversaries, saying the league views the Dodgers as one of its "cherished crown jewels" and an "essential component."

Lauria did suggest, however, that the league was at loggerheads with McCourt, whom he blamed for "today's sorry mess."

In addition to battling the league for control of the team, the Dodgers face a challenge from Jamie McCourt over half of her former husband's ownership assets.

"Jamie McCourt is a presumptive owner of 50 percent of assets," said Laura Davis Jones, an attorney representing her in the bankruptcy case.

Filings in the McCourts' divorce case revealed a lifestyle of excess, extreme even by the standards of LA's super-rich: multiple lavish homes, private security, country club memberships, even a six-figure hair stylist for the couple.

The Dodgers' bankruptcy filing lists assets of up to $1 billion and debts up to $500 million.

Among the 40 largest unsecured claims, totaling about $75 million, are former Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez at nearly $21 million; Andruw Jones at $11 million; pitcher Hiroki Kuroda at $4.4 million; and the Chicago White Sox, which share a spring training facility with the Dodgers in Arizona, at $3.5 million.

Nigel Lythgoe can now add the title "royal party planner" to his overwhelming resume.

The reality star producer and judge is helping coordinate the British Academy of Film and Television Arts "Brits to Watch" event on July 9 at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, which will welcome Prince William and Kate.

"On behalf of BAFTA I would like to say, 'It's absolutely fantastic,'" Lythgoe said of the opportunity to host the royal newlyweds adding, "On behalf of Nigel Lythgoe, 'Aaaaaaahhhhh!'"

When it comes to planning such a prestigious event with the royal couple in town, Lythgoe is feeling the pressure. "It's really tough," he tells PEOPLE. "We've had to keep it secret for so long because we couldn't reveal anything because of security, so now ? we are running around."

Lythgoe and countless volunteers are working tirelessly to organize and arrange the event so that all 42 artists-to-watch, selected by BAFTA, will be highlighted properly at the event. "My job is to put together a big video film of how successful Brits are here in America," Lythgoe says.

The invitations are out, and at each table for eight, the higher echelon of film and television companies will join two Brits, he explains, "So it is very exciting for the young talent."

The A-list event will blend Hollywood star power with royal elegance. "The whole concept of ["Brits to Watch"] is that we are introducing emerging British young talent to the elite of Hollywood," Lythgoe says. "And of course, Prince William and Kate are acting as the magnets that will draw the superstars to the event. But in truth we are enjoying doing this for the British Academy."

William and Kate kick off their North American tour Thursday when they arrive in Ottawa.

Prosecutor says child 'partially eaten' in dog attack

DETROIT - A downriver couple is expected in court this week to face charges in the dog mauling death of a young child.

A 29-year-old Lincoln Park mother and her 35-year-old boyfriend are expected to turn themselves in for arraignment this week.

Police said the woman's five-year-old physically disabled son, Kyle Holland, was attacked by the man's pet wolf-dog hybrid, last July, while he slept.

WWJ Newsradio 950 s Pat Sweeting spoke with assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Raj Prasad, who said the child was partially eaten in the attack.

"A good part of the child's - I guess hip or flank area is the best way to describe it, was eaten," said Prasad.

The boy's mother, Deborah Lane Holland and her boyfriend Earl Dwayne Adkins are both charged with the child's death. They also face separate charges in connection with more than a dozen marijuana plants that police said were being grown in Adkins' basement.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, along with several law enforcement agencies, a number of other experts had to be consulted to make a strong case.

"A forensic odontologist, a forensic anthropologist, wildlife biologist and the Director of the University of California at Davis Director of Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. So, there's a lot of work that needed to be done, as you can imagine, based on the facts of this case," Worthy said.

Arraignment is set for June 29.

Adam Duritz: I'm Weening Myself Off 'Crazy' Pills

Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz -- who suffers from what he calls a "severe mental illness" -- claims he's trying like hell to ween himself off his medication ... despite "vicious withdrawal symptoms."

0628_adam_duritz_BN

Durtiz just went to his Facebook page and explained, "I was f**king crazy. I needed meds. I took meds. Now I'm less crazy. I need less meds. I'm stopping meds."

Back in 2008, Duritz detailed his condition to Men's Health magazine, "I have a form of dissociative disorder that makes the world seem like it?s not real, as if things aren?t taking place. It?s hard to explain, but you feel untethered."

Duritz says he needs the meds to keep himself balanced -- but today, the singer says he already cut his Lithium dosage by half ... and with the withdrawal, he's doing "not so good." Lithium is commonly used as a mood-stabilizing drug.

Duritz adds, "Gotta keep pushing/get off this sh*t. Going faster than I should but it still takes too long."

According to Duritz, it's not a drug addiction problem and he's not trying to get sober -- in fact, the singer openly admits, "I like drinking. A lot. Sober=not for me."

Attempts to reach Adam weren't successful.
