Jeff Conaway Visited by His Ex-Girlfriend Night Before He Collapsed

Late at night on May 9, Jeff Conaway's on-again, off-again girlfriend Victoria Spinoza visited him at the San Fernando Valley home where he was staying with a pal.

According to her best friend Aubry Fisher, Spinoza left Conaway with a hug and told him she'd see him the next day to take him to a doctor's appointment. When she called that morning, Conaway didn't answer.

Spinoza went to the house and the friend couldn't wake Conaway. "That's when Vikki called 911," Fisher tells PEOPLE.

The final meeting is part of a bitter dispute between Spinoza and the family of the 60-year-old star of Grease and Taxi, who is now fighting for his life in a medically induced coma.

The actor's sister, Carla Shreve, mentions the visit in court papers filed May 18 seeking a restraining order against Spinoza. Shreve alleges that Conaway had broken up with Spinoza and "was afraid for his life" from her.

"He had just secured an apartment ... and was calling friends and family anxious to start this part of his life without her," Shreve writes in the restraining order request.

Just hours after Spinoza visited Conaway at midnight, he ended up in critical condition at a Los Angeles-area hospital, Shreve writes. That's when somebody contacted police, who "encouraged us to secure this TRO to keep her away from him."

Police didn't have a comment on the matter. The Superior Court granted a restraining order preventing Spinoza from going near the Conaway's hospital bed until a hearing on June 10.

Conaway, who has long battled problems with prescription and illegal drugs and alcohol, has had a volatile on-and-off relationship with Spinoza, an actress and singer who goes by the stage name Vikki Lizzi. They had filed restraining orders against each other earlier this year, court papers show, then were seen together at an autograph show just weeks ago. She also made an appearance on Celebrity Rehab when Conaway was on the show.

Spinoza could not be reached for comment. But Aubry, who has served as her spokesperson, confirms the account in the restraining order about the midnight visit, but insists Spinoza was not to blame for Conaway falling into unconsciousness.

"She left him at his friend's house and said she'd see him the next day for his doctor's appointment," Fisher says. Spinoza, she adds, has "taken care of him for seven years" and says that the restraining order is "horrible and wrong."

"When Vikki went to visit Jeff in the hospital, she sat by his side," Fisher says of a day before the restraining order was granted. "They were in the process of reconciling."

Conaway's manager, Phil Brock, however, says that the actor's family is "absolutely justified in securing the restraining order" against Spinoza.
