Olivia Katrandjian: Milton Nascimento: A Wizard at Work at the Montreal International Jazz Festival

On Saturday night, when the Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Milton Nascimento walked onto the stage of Thtre Maisonneuve to perform at the 32nd Montreal International Jazz Festival, he didn't have to warm up the crowd.

Outside, some of the nearly 3000 performers who play in the 10-day festival had already taken over the Quartier des Spectacles. Inside, the people wanted Milton.

Nascimento waddled over to the microphone, shifting his weight slowly and deliberately from one foot to the other. Coloured lights enveloped the stage, creating a dark purple mist around him. As he began singing "E a Gente Sonhando" ("And Us Dreaming"), the title track from his latest CD, I wondered what the already dark theater looked like through the sunglasses perched on his wide nose.

Nascimento is so comfortable on stage that you can almost tell he has been performing since the early 1960s. He emits a serenity when he sings that seeps into the audience. After several tunes, he sang "Lilia" from the 1974 album Native Dancer by Wayne Shorter, and I felt like David Foster Wallace watching Roger Federer play tennis -- this was a religious experience.

At times I could hear Antonio Carlos Jobim, the father of bossa nova, coming through the microphone. Other tunes flirted with Latin American and African beats, and at one point Milton turned around and started salsa stepping with his guitar player. Somehow all the styles melted together into the kind of music that puts a smile on your face and makes you feel at peace with yourself.

After the show, I went backstage to talk to the band. I asked Wilson Lopes, the guitarist, what it's like to play with one of Brazil's greatest singers.

"I love Milton," he told me. "In 1994, when I came for the first time, I had already played with Milton around the world. But Montreal is my favorite festival. The energy, the good vibrations, the quality of artists."

"When Milton plays, he creates a trance [in the audience]. He makes it happen. He is the bruxo," Lopes added.

"Bruxo?" I asked, wishing I spoke Portuguese.

"Clown? No. Big hat?" said Lopes, searching for the right word with his hands. "He is the Harry Potter..."

"A wizard?" I asked.

"Yes. Milton is the wizard," Lopes said without even a hint of humour. He took my hand and led me through the crowd that had gathered backstage into Milton's dressing room. Milton was sitting in a chair, seemingly oblivious to the number of fans trying to catch a glimpse of him.

"This city is fantastic," Milton told me. "Full of people on the streets. The other times I've come here, I love watching the other concerts. There is a band playing in every corner. The last time I was here, I found Celia Cruz singing in one of those corners."

I looked through my bag for a pen to write down what he was saying, but found nothing. I was a writer without a pen. Realizing my embarrassment, Milton handed me his as he continued speaking.

"Today I saw something like a circus here," he said, referring to the gymnasts and stilt walkers entertaining the crowds outside between performances. "That, mixed with music -- only here. That's what makes it special."

"Would you come back?" I asked him.

"Of course. Just call me."

Later that night, walking through the Place des Arts, I took out my notebook to jot something down. I reached into my bag and pulled out Milton's pen. I froze on the sidewalk, realizing that I never gave it back. Should I return it? What would I say? I would sound like a desperate woman who leaves something in her lover's apartment just for an excuse to return. "I stole your pen," I could say. "We should have lunch sometime."

Then I looked at it. Between the gold ends was shiny blue enamel decorated with sparkling gold stars and crescent moons. He really was a wizard.

Ashley and Cheryl divorced in September 2010

As Cheryl Cole prepares to start a new life with her love rat ex Ashley Cole, she's probably convinced herself that he's a changed man.

But hairdresser Aimee Walton, 26 - the first woman to expose Ashley as a cheat in December 2007 - thinks not.

They met at a club when Ashley, 30, was on a night out with his pals and he famously vomited before they had sex and he allegedly slapped her bum so hard that his wedding ring left a mark.

Aimee, a mum of two from south London tells us: ?She'd be mad to forget what Ashley did to her and the pain he caused her.

'It might be in the past, but his infidelity will always be a part of their relationship.

'I fear history will repeat itself and she'll end up back at square one.

'Then the whole country will be disappointed in her because she went back for more after he treated her so badly.'

Selena Gomez Stands Up for Single-Parent Families

When Selena Gomez's birth parents divorced when she was just five years old, her working mother raised her as an only child. And while the Texas-born beauty has enjoyed much success at a very young age, she admits she didn't have an easy childhood but has come to terms with her parents' divorce.

"I just think it's really common nowadays, that you grow up in a single-parent household. I grew up like that, and I was fine. My dad was still in my life, so it was good," Selena told me when I sat down with her after seeing 'Monte Carlo,' her fun new movie. "I love that there's that message in the movie. Being able to be married into a family, which is so common, and having people you don't know like stepsisters and stepbrothers, and getting past the awkward stage. I think it was nice that we touched on that."

The film follows a young lady (Selena) who gets a stepsister (Leighton Meester) who couldn't be more different from her. Leighton, of 'Gossip Girl' fame, told me about growing up in her own blended family, and how she dropped the "step" and considers all of her siblings her brothers and sisters. "I feel like we're all family, and it's actually a happier family then when I was younger and it was just me and my brothers," Leighton said. "I have sisters now, and I always wanted sisters, and so for the last nine years they've been my sisters. It's great, but I think a lot of people can relate to that.

Leighton said that the scenario in 'Monte Carlo' is realistic and that blending a family isn't without it's problems..

"It is sort of weird at first, I guess," she said. "I think the movie touches on that a bit. It's the same thing as meeting somebody on a movie, either they're cool or they're not."

For the record, these two ladies loved working together and tell me they were best mates after seven minutes. The film 'Monte Carlo,' which has a wonderful 'Cinderella' feel about it, opens this Friday.

Seven Days Left to Apply for the Oxygen Accelerator! Be the First Woman to Apply and Your Startup Could Win 75K

Demonstrating that startup accelerator programmes aren?t limited to London Oxygen Accelerator, launched in May, will deliver investment, intensive mentoring and training for tech startups from the heart of the Midlands. Today, the Birmingham-based organization has put up a 75,000 prize to be won by one of the 10 participating teams.

Seven days remain to submit applications for the programme, which commences September 1 and is open to individuals or groups from all over the world. Organisers are looking for an initial ten startups to fill the first ?boot camp? and successful applicants will be required to relocate for theintensive13-week schedule, receiving 20,000 in investment whilst working from Birmingham Science Park Aston to promote their ideas and products.

Applicants will be provided with access to a range of start-of-the-art resources, receiving guidance and support from established tech entrepreneurs but also major companies including Microsoft, Amazon and Google. They will receive financial and legal support, but also that helping hand that could open the right doors for companies needing assistance to reach their target market.

At the end of the 13-week programme, startups will be able to ?speed pitch? their products to a large panel ofventurecapitalists and angel investors at an ?Investor Day?.

Even then, it won?t be the end of support for the companies involved; founder Mark Hales hopes to create an Oxygen Alumni, ensuring the door stays open for companies that have passed through the programme but also encourages them to come back and help new applicants in the future.

As an additional incentive for the participating companies, Hales has put up a 75,000 cash prize for the startup voted for by the mentors, investors and peers, as the ?most improved?.

This won?t mean that the overall ?best? company will win the prize, merely one that has ?gained fruitfully from the programme and has proven its ability to continue to develop a sustainable business.?

The cash reward will be received 13 weeks after the programme has finished so not to influence the investment decisions of potential funders. Mark Hales said:

?Investing a further 75,000 into the team that has shown a marked improvement from when they joined the programme, will help fuel inspiration, determination and the passion needed to make a business work. I want to make clear that each team selected for this process is a winner to have come through the 13 weeks and this cash-injection is in no way a bias towards one particular company. It?s just another investment to be gained at the end of the process when each business will be pitching to investors on ?Investor Day?.?

It?s unique for accelerator programmes to give away such a large sum of money with absolutely no strings attached, so this is a very good deal for the winning startup.

With a week to go until the application deadline, we?ve been told that there have been no applications from women-led startups so far.

To apply, founders are required to field a series of questions on their existing structure, investment and revenue generation, sending a short video to describe why they should be part of the accelerator?s first ten startups. Judges will then critique the applicants on the strength of their ideas, how much they will benefit from the programme, looking at how well the founders present their companies and the team as a whole. Click here to apply.

Applications are open until June 30, with interviews commencing mid-July.

The programme is also recruiting mentors and investors, who can apply directly via the Oxygen Accelerator website.

The original articles announcing the programme launch and the 75,000 prize appeared on The NextWeb, a The NextWomen partner and contributor. See their website here. Click here to read Oxygen Accelerator Founder Mark Hales' guest post for The NextWomen on the lack of women applicants.

Cee Lo Dresses as Patti LaBelle for Tribute Performance (Video)

Cee Lo Green and Patti LaBelleCee Lo Green's exuberant awards show outfits are becoming legendary and at Sunday night's (June 26) BET Awards he took it to a whole new level.

Performing a tribute to Patti LaBelle, who was the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Green appeared in a colorful sequin jacket and spiky black wig, which he wore in an effort to mimic the singer's famous '80s hairdo, as he belted out her hit 'Somebody Loves You.'

While the crowd responded positively to his attempt at dressing up just like LaBelle, he also slipped up, addressing the audience as "motherf*****s," before the censors had time to block the expletive, which aired live on the East Coast, but was removed for the West Coast feed.

Singer Marsha Ambrosious and gospel star Shirley Ceaser also lent their pipes to the tribute before LaBelle herself took the stage to perform a few of her hits including 'Lady Marmalade.'

While the singer seemed genuinely moved and grateful for the acknowledgement of her contribution to the music world, there was one person that was none too happy about being shut out of honoring LaBelle: R&B crooner Lloyd.

The Atlanta native tapped the soul singer for the remix of his song 'Lay It Down,' which is a sample of LaBelle's 'Love, Need and Want You.' Following the show, the 25-year-old publicly blasted BET for not including him in the performance. "I'm just very passionate," Lloyd told the Boombox of his reaction to the snub. "I'm just passionate about my music and my art, and I'm passionate about being recognized for that, being the only young person of my generation to work with the likes of Patti LaBelle. Blame me if you want but I'm just passionate."

POP

Selena Gomez's first two albums never quite managed to separate her music from her main gig as a Disney Channel star. But with the final episode of Wizards of Waverly Place in the can, 18-year-old Gomez begins to grow into her musical identity with a set of bright and buzzy techno-disco tunes.

On When the Sun Goes Down, Gomez takes on a bit of Britney Spears' clubby femme fatale and a little of Katy Perry's sexy role tweaker (both contributed songs to the album), but she hasn't turned her back on the young female audience that looks up to her as a role model. "Who says you're the only one that's hurting?" she sings in the girl-power lead single, Who Says, noting that self-doubt is "the price of beauty."

Even the album's most overtly sexual song, We Own the Night, tells its story with tame language. Compared with recent Top 40 hits from Rihanna and Enrique Iglesias, lyrics like "Is it all right if I'm with you for the night" sound positively modest. Such restraint, along with a rather conventional approach to dance-pop, may keep this music out of anything but all-ages dance clubs, but undeniably catchy singles Who Says and Love You Like a Love Song suggest that she's on the right track as she transitions into adulthood.
