Critic's Corner for the weekend: 'The Glades,' 'Teen Wolf'

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

?A fine young show has no right to look this tired. One of last season's most pleasant surprises, The Glades (A&E, Sunday, 10 ET/PT), returns with a listless episode that is long on atmosphere and short on plot, loaded with cop clichs and brought down by a mystery that is so transparent, you're likely to spot the killer on first appearance.

  • Matt Passmore stars as former Chicago detective Jim Longworth in A&E's original series The Glades.

Luckily, next week's episode is better ? and even better, Matt Passmore is still giving a central performance that is the essence of summer-diversion charm.

Still, there's a definite feeling of languor here, as if the show is resting on laurels that have yet to be awarded. Hop to, people.

?Where high expectations hurt The Glades, lower expectations boost Teen Wolf (Sunday, 11 ET/PT), MTV's attempt to feed teenagers' Twilight-inspired fondness for buff young werewolves.

There is not much originality in this darker remake of the Michael J. Fox comedy, but it's well-executed and amusingly self-aware and boasts fine performances by Tyler Posey as the nerd-turned-wolfboy and Dylan O'Brien as his best friend.

It takes a bit too long to get to where adults will know it's going, but odds are teenagers won't mind, and they're the target.
