Two San Fernando Valley men among four recent fatalities on state Highway 2

PEARBLOSSOM - Three separate traffic crashes in the Angeles National Forest, in which four people were killed, remained under investigation Saturday.

Two of the fatal crashes were on a section of state Highway 2 that had recently reopened to traffic after a multi-year storm damage repair job was completed.

In the first crash, Julio Cesar Velasquez, a 21-year-old resident of Pasadena, slammed his car into an embankment on Angeles Crest Highway, before crashing into a tree. Velasquez was found dead at the crash site, south of Dark Canyon Truck Trail near La Canada Flintridge, at about 4:05 a.m. Friday.

Later that day, two men were killed in a single-vehicle crash about 9:15 a.m. Friday on Big Pines Highway, south of Big Rock Creek, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver, Pasquale Marchese, 80, of North Hollywood, was driving his car southeast on Big Pines Highway when he swerved into the northbound lane.

Marchese tried to turn the car back into his lane but instead lost control and drove off the road. His vehicle hit a dirt embankment and overturned.

Marchese died at the scene. His passenger, Anthony Baccilleri, 64, of Panorama City was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The third crash was reported to the CHP about 4:30 p.m., Friday, occurred on the Angeles Crest Highway two miles east of Gizzly Flat Road. The CHP reports a 48-year-old Monterey Park man abruptly turned his

car to the left and swerved off the highway, tumbling approximately 500 feet down the mountainside.

The driver died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
