Prince William and Kate Middleton will be newlyweds in a little more than a week and they're already making a splash as a couple. The 28-year-old heir to the British throne and his bride-to-be, 29, are on the Time 100 List of the most influential people in the world.
Their wedding, like it or not, is making a difference ? even if that just might be giving a different spin to people's daily dose of headline news.
Best-selling romance novelist Jackie Collins, who is a native of England, writes in Time about the pair: "During these days of politicians making promises they never keep, financial woes and doom and gloom, what better than a good old (albeit expensive) fairy-tale wedding for all to enjoy?"
Time editors consider many aspects when they make the final determination of who is on the list, which does not rank the honorees in any particular order. World leaders, such as President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron, are on the list. But so are private individuals whose ideas and actions have an impact on others.
For example, Gary White, an expert in water-supply systems, is honored with actor Matt Damon for their efforts with Water.org to make sure people have access to clean water. First lady Michelle Obama is on the list, but not for her style or role as hostess at White House parties. It's because of her campaign to take on childhood obesity.
And yes, celebrities who wield influence are on the Time 100 too. Among the performers who made the special honor roll: Justin Bieber ( "born a star," writes Usher), Mark Wahlberg ("genuine," writes Amy Adams), Amy Poehler ("fresh and unexpected," writes Aziz Ansari), Bruno Mars ("can do everything," writes B.o.B), Chris Colfer ("lives by extreme truth," writes Dianna Agron), Blake Lively ("down-to-earth coolness," writes Baz Luhrmann) and Sting ("writes in such a hip time signature," notes Esperanza Spalding).
Here are some things other famous profilers had to say about others from the entertainment world who made the list this year:
?Ted Turner on Oprah Winfrey, 57: "I have often said that if women ruled the world for the next 100 years, we'd all be better off. I have a feeling that with the possibilities at Oprah's fingertips, we may be one step closer."
?Helen Mirren on Colin Firth, 50: "He can be the glamorous celebrity, but look closely at photos of him on the red carpet: there is a kindness in his eyes, an introspection and consideration. He actively pursues a deeper understanding of the world around him, and his humanitarianism gives a depth and wisdom to his performances."
?Elisabeth Moss on (Mad Men creator) Matt Weiner, 45: "He is a true artist, a seeker of truth. He has held up a mirror not only to a time period but to us and has demanded that we look at ourselves (whether beautiful or ugly, good or bad), look at our weaknesses and, most important, look at what makes us great."
?Ted Danson on Damon, 40: "In Matt Damon's case, what he wants you to know is that every 15 minutes a child under the age of 5 dies because of a lack of clean water and sanitation and it doesn't have to be that way."
?Michael Stipe on Patti Smith, 64: "With Just Kids, her memoir of her friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti reminds us that innocence, utopian ideals, beauty and revolt are enlightenment's guiding stars in the human journey."
?Glenn Close on Mia Wasikowska, 21: "Mia will be many things in life and will defy expectation because she's brilliant and curious and not fooled by what most people define as success. I will relish her journey and only hope she will be in my life for a very long time."
