Tune in to a sprightly, hilarious and fiendishly clever Modern Family (* * * * out of four, ABC, 9 ET/PT) just for the comfort of knowing that some folks in the sitcom world still know what they're doing.
There are, as usual, three stories in perfect equilibrium, one a bit more serious, but all fully formed and adroitly told. (How the show pulls that weekly balancing act off is a minor miracle.) While Jay deals with a visit from his brother Tommy (a wonderful guest turn by Jonathan Banks), Phil launches a new family-based ad campaign, and Cam takes over the musical at Luke and Manny's school.
This week, watch the way Family uses small throwaway jokes ("Where I come from, brothers respect each other." "That's why Colombia is such a peaceful utopia.") to soften you up for the bigger punch lines and sight gags to come, as well-laid plans collapse and then sweetly re-form.
The end result is one of the best Family episodes of the season, which also means it's one of the best episodes of the season, period.
