James Cameron Compares 'Sanctum' And 'Avatar 2' Underwater Scenes

'We have to figure out how to do performance capture underwater, which has never been done,' he says of 'Avatar' sequel.

When James Cameron isn't making record-breaking blockbusters or helping NASA design 3-D cameras, he spends his spare time producing the little $30 million underwater thriller "Sanctum," which opens Friday.

In the film, directed by Alister Grierson and written by Australian explorer/ filmmaker/ Cameron pal Andrew Wight, a team of divers get trapped during an underwater expedition when an unexpected storm floods the entrance to a cave. The production was conceived and filmed in 3-D, much of it underwater.

When we caught up with the trio behind the film — Grierson, Cameron and Wight — we asked, given the fact that they now have plenty of experience shooting underwater and in 3-D, if they will be teaming up for "Avatar 2," which Cameron has said will partially take place underwater.

" 'Avatar' does have some underwater stuff, but it will mostly involve characters that are the Na'vi and the Avatars," Cameron said. "So we have to figure out how to do performance capture underwater, which has never been done. That's a whole other problem," he admitted.

When Cameron said he and his friends will look for more opportunities to work together, Grierson joked that he'd be taking over Sam Worthington's role.

"We had a great experience [working together] this time," Cameron said. "I don't know if 'Sanctum 2' is in the cards, though."

He added that, whether or not Grierson and Wight get involved in the "Avatar" action, they'll all be doing more underwater projects and that they learned new tricks from their work on "Sanctum."

"Every time you do a project, you learn. You make the cameras better, you learn more about the procedure," Cameron said, before turning a bit metaphorical about his highly technical filmmaking process. "We like to build race cars and then we like to go race the race car and then we go back and work on the engine some more."

Check out everything we've got on "Sanctum."

Justin Bieber is on press rounds promoting his 3-D movie "Never Say Never," out next weekend. He appeared on the "Today" show, where he sat down with Matt Lauer to talk about the film and how it chronicles his rise to fame.

"Not just that I've been working hard, just showing what I've been going through and how much it takes out of you. It's been so much fun to be able to live my dream," he said, with a crowd of screaming fans watching.

The film is part concert film, part documentary, and his fans play a big role in it. Bieber said that the part in the film where he gives away tickets to his fans is his favorite. "I love that part. It's one of my favorite parts because everyone gets happy. It makes everyone happier. You go in the back and you give them tickets ... it's amazing."

Bieber explained that while his rise to fame was no accident, he had no idea it would be this meteoric or epic. "It was crazy because I started out posting videos online and not wishing for anything and then this all happened really fast," he said. "I've been playing music since I can remember. It's such a big part of my life and I want that to be shown, especially in my movie."

Sure, Bieber is busy being a pop star, but he says that he makes sure that in addition to working hard, he gets some time to play hard. "Well, I make sure I have at least one day off a week. I need one day of downtime. The rest of the week is all jam-packed. I have to have at least one day," he said. "It's hard because I'm away from my family, like, my brother and sister. You only live once, but at the same time, by brother and sister are going to grow up and they're going to be proud of me."

These days Bieber's other big challenge is puberty. "My voice is definitely changing, gradually," he said. "It's how you go through it. I have a good vocal coach."

Wearing a tuxedo T-shirt, Justin Bieber appeared on "Late Show With David Letterman" on Monday night to talk about fame, his 3-D movie "Never Say Never" and his lack of understanding of the U.S. education system.

When asked if he knows his IQ score and goes to school, Bieber said, "I don't know my IQ. I'm in school. I did school this morning. I do three hours a day and 15 hours a week. I'm in 11th grade. ... I don't know [what level that is in the U.S.], I'm Canadian," he laughed, adding that he's thinking of going to college someday.

"Right now [I'm] just kind of focusing on my music a lot. That's really important to me," he said. "This movie I have coming out. ... Most people just think they just put me together, some people just made me like I'm some factory machine, but this movie proves that I worked hard to get here and that's what I wanted to show."

Letterman then poked fun at Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, for using his nickname instead of his given name of Scott. "Tell me more about Scooter," Letterman laughed.

"That's what me and my mom were thinking. Like, 'This guy named Scooter wants to sign me? How professional could this person be?' " Bieber laughed. "But it turns out he's got some creditability. He's not old and he's not young. He's like 30 ... he's really not — he's 29."

Letterman quipped back, "29 is OK, but 30 is too old to be calling yourself Scooter. That's the cutoff. We're done."

Braun later took to Twitter to laugh off the good-natured joke, writing, "Thank u David Letterman for allowing me to get texts from people I haven't spoken to in years telling me I might need to go by Scott now. I don't think so. lol. I'm Scooter until it's cool again. when is that u ask? when I'm grandpa Scooter. That's one cool grandpa."

It was the first of two appearances on "Letterman" this week as Bieber will be back Friday to do the Top 10 list.

Beyonce's Mom Says Daughter's Style Has Always Been 'Edgy'

'It's just a result of her constantly evolving,' Tina Knowles says of the fashion in Beyonce's "I Am ... World Tour" DVD concert special.

Beyoncé has never been shy about hitting the stage in stunning costumes. Her appearance has always been a mixture of showgirl sparkle and pop star razzle-dazzle. And her style is on full display in her new DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour."

Her mom and stylist, Tina Knowles, said that while the looks may seem a bit edgier than what fans have seen from the singer in the past, she thinks that her superstar daughter has always been ahead of the style curve.

"Well, the wonderful Thierry Mugler designed the costumes, and I actually worked on some of the dancers and the band, and it was just amazing to work with him because he is so creative," Knowles told MTV News at a New York screening of the special. "So it's just a result of her constantly evolving, but she's been edgy. It's funny for people to say she went more edgy, but she's been wearing body suits and that type of thing."

And while Knowles may act as her daughter's stylist and costume designer, she says that Bey's style decisions are all her own. "Well, we discussed her working with Thierry Mugler, and I'm the biggest fan. And so she had seen some of the fashions and she loved it," she said. "So we always discuss things, but it's her decision, it's her career."

Beyoncé, who also directed the concert special , said it gave her a better understanding of the filmmaking process. "It was hard work," she said. "I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it. ... Well, I've done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I'm so thrilled."
